Cervical&LumbarSpondylosis

What is Spondylosis?
Spondylosis is a broad medical term used to describe age-related degeneration of the spinal discs. Over time, these intervertebral discs dehydrate, shrink, and lose their ability to act as shock absorbers. This wear and tear often leads to secondary osteoarthritis, causing the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes) along the edges of the vertebrae.
Key Symptoms
While many individuals with spondylosis remain asymptomatic, those who do experience symptoms usually notice a slow, progressive worsening. Common symptoms include:
- Stiffness: Particularly upon waking up in the morning or after prolonged periods of inactivity.
- Radiating Pain: If bone spurs press against nerve roots (radiculopathy), pain may shoot down the arms (cervical) or legs (lumbar).
- Numbness & Tingling: A sensation of "pins and needles" in the extremities due to nerve compression.
- Muscle Weakness: Advanced nerve compression can lead to weakened grip strength or difficulty lifting the legs.
Causes and Risk Factors
The primary cause of spondylosis is simply the aging process. As we age, the cartilage that cushions our joints naturally degrades. However, several factors can accelerate this process:
- Poor Posture: Years of hunching over a desk or "tech neck" from looking down at smartphones places immense, unnatural loads on the cervical spine.
- Repetitive Stress: Occupations or sports that involve heavy lifting or repetitive spinal twisting.
- Genetics: A family history of severe osteoarthritis or spinal issues.
- Previous Injuries: Trauma to the neck or back can initiate the degenerative process decades earlier than normal.
Our Clinical Treatment Approach
At Holistic Health Clinic, we believe that non-invasive, proactive physiotherapy is the gold standard for managing spondylosis. Our goal is to relieve nerve pressure and stabilize the spine.
- Spinal Decompression Therapy: We utilize targeted, gentle traction techniques to create micro-spaces between the vertebrae, instantly relieving pressure on trapped nerves and allowing the discs to rehydrate.
- Targeted Core & Neck Strengthening: We cannot reverse the bony changes, but we can build a strong muscular "corset" around the spine. By strengthening the deep neck flexors and the lumbar core, we drastically reduce the mechanical load on the degenerative discs.
- Postural Retraining: We analyze your daily biomechanics and teach ergonomic adjustments. Correcting how you sit, sleep, and lift is vital for long-term pain prevention.
- Electrotherapy (IFT & Ultrasound): Used in the acute phase to rapidly reduce localized tissue inflammation and pain.
Surgery should always be a last resort. With consistent, expert physical therapy, the vast majority of our patients successfully manage their spondylosis and return to an active, pain-free lifestyle.
