OsteoarthritisoftheKnee

What is Knee Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, often referred to as "wear and tear" arthritis. It occurs when the articular cartilage—the smooth, protective tissue that cushions the ends of your bones—gradually wears away. In the knee joint, this deterioration eventually leads to bone rubbing directly against bone, producing friction, severe inflammation, and structural damage.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Knee OA usually develops slowly, and the pain worsens over time. Key indicators include:
- Activity-Induced Pain: Your knee may hurt during or after movement, especially when climbing stairs, walking long distances, or rising from a seated position.
- Morning Stiffness: Joint stiffness that is most noticeable upon waking up or after sitting for a prolonged period, usually lasting less than 30 minutes.
- Swelling and Tenderness: The knee joint may feel warm, swollen, and tender to the touch due to active inflammation of the synovial lining.
- Crepitus: You might feel a grating sensation or hear a popping/cracking sound when you bend or straighten your knee.
- Loss of Flexibility: An inability to move the knee through its full, normal range of motion.
Why Rest is Often the Wrong Answer
When a joint hurts, human instinct dictates that we should stop using it. However, in the case of osteoarthritis, profound inactivity is highly detrimental. Lack of movement leads to rapid atrophy of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. When these muscles weaken, they stop acting as shock absorbers. Consequently, more mechanical load and impact are transferred directly onto the already degenerating knee joint, accelerating the damage and increasing pain.
Our Comprehensive Physiotherapy Protocol
While medical science cannot regrow lost cartilage, expert physiotherapy can radically alter the biomechanical environment surrounding the joint, dramatically reducing pain and delaying the need for knee replacement surgery.
- Muscular Offloading (Strengthening): This is our primary focus. By utilizing closed-kinetic-chain exercises, we safely and aggressively strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. These strong muscles absorb the impact of walking, effectively "lifting" pressure off the knee joint.
- Joint Mobilization: Our therapists use gentle manual techniques to maintain your available range of motion and stimulate the production of synovial fluid, which acts as the joint's natural biological lubricant.
- Proprioceptive Training: We improve your balance and joint awareness, ensuring that your knee tracks correctly over your foot during dynamic movements, preventing uneven wear on the cartilage.
- Integrative Weight Management: Every extra kilogram of body weight adds four kilograms of compressive force on the knee. We combine physiotherapy with clinical dietetics; achieving even a 5% reduction in body weight can halve the pain experienced by an OA patient.
A proactive, movement-based approach is the undisputed gold standard for managing knee osteoarthritis. Let us help you keep moving.
