Complex carbohydrates (like brown rice, oats, and whole-grain pasta) replenish muscle glycogen stores, giving you the energy required to complete your rigorous physical therapy sessions without fatiguing early. Furthermore, insulin (released when eating carbs) is highly anabolic and helps shuttle amino acids into the recovering muscle cells.
Micronutrients for Connective Tissue
If you are recovering from a ligament or tendon injury (like an ACL tear), you need specific micronutrients to rebuild collagen:
- Vitamin C: Essential for the cross-linking of collagen fibers, providing strength to the new tissue. Found in citrus fruits, bell peppers, and broccoli.
- Zinc & Copper: Trace minerals vital for wound healing and cellular repair. Found in pumpkin seeds, lentils, and lean meats.
