What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a distinct medical diagnosis; rather, it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. It refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.
Recognizing Sciatic Nerve Pain
The pain associated with sciatica can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes it can feel like a jolt or electric shock. Key symptoms include:
- Radiating Pain: Pain that travels from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the hallmark of sciatica.
- Numbness or Muscle Weakness: You may experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.
- Worsening with Movement: The pain is often aggravated by prolonged sitting, standing up, coughing, or sneezing.
Common Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, compressed, or inflamed. The most common culprits include:
- Herniated Disc: The most frequent cause. The soft inner core of a spinal disc pushes through the tough outer ring and presses directly on the nerve root.
- Bone Spurs: Overgrowth of bone on the vertebrae (often associated with osteoarthritis/spondylosis) can narrow the space where nerves exit the spine.
- Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, can spasm and trap the sciatic nerve beneath it.
- Spinal Stenosis: A narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back, which puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
